Extinction Rebellion protesters shut down Liverpool road in climate fight

Climate protesters shut down a Liverpool city centre road today in their fight for climate change.

Activists from Liverpool blocked off Mann Island from 12-2pm armed with chairs, banners and potted plants.

More than 100 people walked out into the road for the protest, with one member of the group tying a hammock between two sets of traffic lights.

Merseyside police attended the peaceful protest which saw a banner saying "life or death" blocking off the entrance to the road.

Others sang along to live music and waved Extinction Rebellion flags.

At 3pm the climate activists took part in a "die-in" where they all lay down on the ground.

Drivers along the main road were seen pulling up after seeing the activists lying on the floor to see what was going on.

Earlier in the day climate activist Drew McMaster, 30, from Skemersdale, told the ECHO : "At 3pm we're all going to lie down on the floor, for what's called a die-in.

"It's a symbol for human extinction and the collapse of what we know socially.

"We've done it in the past and people walking past in the street often come and join us. It definitely makes an impact."

Climate activist Amanda Stanley said: "It's about getting people to stop and think about the climate crisis.

"We're here to cause a bit of disruption and to be seen but this disruption is not going to be the same as it will be in 20 years time."

The Manchester demonstration is planned to last until at least Monday, with members of the Liverpool group going to join them from tomorrow onwards.

Members of Extinction Rebellion Liverpool said the Mann Island protest comes ahead of a two-week demonstration in London on October 7.
