Extinction Rebellion protesters blocking M32 traffic in Bristol 'have no plans to leave'

Extinction Rebellion protesters have caused traffic chaos across the city this morning (July 17) after blocking the M32 for a second time.

Newfoundland Street near the motorway junction has been blocked in both directions by climate change activists, some of whom have attached themselves to a bathtub in the road - which they described as a "pink boat".

One of the people attached to the tub, who called himself Tom, told Bristol Live: I have no plans to leave - it is in the hands of the police now."

Another spokesperson from Extinction Rebellion said: "We're going to be here as long as possible."

The activists are letting through traffic every seven minutes for two minutes and a woman is carrying a sign counting down this time.

The protest has caused severe delays on the M32 and throughout the city centre.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area as police arrived at the scene to control traffic.

University of West England students set to graduate today were also warned to find other routes into the city.

The protest group said it let a car through its blockade which contained a woman in labour.

The action comes after protesters blocked the motorway yesterday afternoon.

Extinction Rebellion said it would "occupy" the city for five days, disrupting "key transport routes".
