Extinction Rebellion protesters block exit at Merseyside printing press

Extinction Rebellion protesters have blocked the exit of a Merseyside printing press.

The group used a van and a boat to disrupt the business at Newprinters, on Kitling Road, in Knowsley shortly after 10pm on Friday night.

Hanging banners at the site and refusing to move throughout the night, protesters have said they are trying to stop a number of large national papers making it to shelves on Saturday morning.

Newsprinters at Knowsley Industrial Park is a large employer in Merseyside and prints products for outlets such as The Times, The Daily Mail, The S*n and The Evening Standard.

A police presence is in place at the site and officers will likely remain there through the night to monitor the ongoing protest.

According to their Twitter account, Extinction Rebellion claim they also have protesters in place at a printing press in Broxborne, London.

On Twitter, they said: "Extinction Rebellion blocks News Corps Printworks and demands they FREE THE TRUTH.

“As the printing presses crank up, #ExtinctionRebellion groups in North London and Liverpool are taking on the titans of the media industry.”

Protesters could be heard singing and laughing as around 15 of them sat on the van, the floor, and in the boat outside the business’ exit.
