Extinction Rebellion heading to Leeds city centre for protest this weekend

Climate change activists have announced they will be holding a protest in Leeds City Centre this weekend.

Extinction Rebellion's (XR) Leeds branch has planned a demonstration on Sunday (August 9) at Millenium Square from 12pm to 1pm.

The protest, which has been organised in support of indigenous communities across the Americas, is the second demonstration that will take place in the city this week.

Also, on Saturday (August 8), NHS workers in Leeds will take to the streets of Leeds to demand a pay rise from the Government.

On a social media post, XR said itsdemonstration will be conducted in a ‘safe manner’ with attendees being urged to follow the 2-metre social distancing rules at the event.

There will be a minute's silence in remembrance of all the indigenous people who died during recent conflicts, a video presentation and speakers on the day.

They said: “Please come along to raise awareness of the atrocities and violence inflicted upon indigenous communities.

“If you are able to then please donate to help communities fight off COVID-19 which is disproportionately affecting indigenous communities across the Americas please do so in the following link. Unfortunately, health systems collapsed across Latin America months ago, and their governments aren’t financially supporting the most vulnerable people. They need all the help they can get, every spare penny counts."
