Extinction Rebellion have POSTPONED Newcastle road protest planned for Friday

A climate protest which was expected to bring city centre roads grinding to a halt on Friday has been called off.

The Extinction Rebellion were planning to stage a "slow cycle" protest to put pressure on Newcastle City Council to take action on the climate crisis.

Now, the group's leaders say the action won't go ahead because they don't want to interfere with school exams planned on the same day.

A spokesperson said: "It has been brought to our attention that important exams are taking place at schools in Newcastle on the morning of Friday 7th June, and as a result Extinction Rebellion (XR) has taken the decision to postpone the Bicycle Go Slow that was scheduled to take place at rush hour that morning.

"There are very few circumstances in which XR would consider cancelling or postponing an action such as this, and we do not undertake it lightly.

"We believe, however, that the next generation already faces enough difficulty and uncertainty due to the climate and extinction crises, and we do not wish to make their lives any harder.

"We would, however, question whether our current education system is adequately preparing our children for imminent climate and ecosystem breakdown.

"Extinction Rebellion believes that it is necessary to act peacefully yet disruptively in order to raise awareness of the environmental crisis, and it is therefore inevitable that our future actions will cause a degree of disruption.

"By postponing this action until the summer holiday we intend to minimise disruption to school children sitting exams and to enable more of them to join us on the day, should they wish to."

In April, dozens of cyclists caused delays around  Newcastle Central Station and the Tyne Bridge  with the demonstration before going to a rally outside Gateshead Council, where they wanted a climate emergency called.

On Friday, cyclists were expected to make their way from Newcastle Racecourse from 7.15am before a protest outside the Civic Centre.

The group had pledged that, with the cooperation of Northumbria Police , they would make way for emergency vehicles and buses.
