Extinction Rebellion 'go slow': Hundreds of cyclists hold up Bristol city centre traffic

Around 1,000 cyclists took a "leisurely" ride around Bristol city centre as part of an Extinction Rebellion protest.

Activists who want to raise awareness of the 'climate emergency' started the 'go slow' at 6.30pm today (July 17).

They rode through areas including Cabot Circus and Queen Square for more than an hour, holding up traffic at the tail end of rush hour.

Bristol Live content editor Ruth Ovens said cyclists travelled at “walking speed” through the city centre, accompanied by a police escort.

Matt Davenport, who works at the Nationwide Building Society in Cabot Circus, said: "It’s crazy. I have never seen anything like it.

“I can barely even hazard a guess at how many people are cycling."

The 37-year-old added that he agrees with the point the protesters are making, but questioned the emissions caused by the queuing traffic that resulted from the demonstration.

Dr Claire Ferraro, a University of Bristol research associate, tweeted: "1000s of peacefully protesting XRBristol cyclists in Bristol city centre. What a beautiful sight!"
