Extinction Rebellion Dumfries and Galloway carry out litter pick along the River Nith

A team of environmentalists have helped to tidy up a stretch of Dumfries riverbank.

Eight volunteers from Extinction Rebellion Dumfries and Galloway carried out a litter pick along the Nith on Saturday.

The group walked from Nithsdale Rowing Club to Lincluden Abbey and gathered seven sacks of rubbish along the way.

Plastic bottles, glass bottles and cans made up a significant portion of the waste collected.

The group were able to separate these for recycling.

A group spokesman said: “While it was a pleasant afternoon for a walk, the group found it a little disheartening to see the amount of waste.

“However, it was nice to spend some time by the river and to engage in environmental action.

“A highlight of the day was a visit to the orchard at Lincluden Abbey, which rewarded the volunteers for their work with fresh apples and pears.”

The group would like to thank the People’s Project Dumfries for the loan of 10 brand new litterpicks.

Anyone interested in getting involved in environmental action in the region is welcome to get in touch through the XR D&G Facebook page.
