Extinction Rebellion campaigners target Bristol city centre

Young Extinction Rebellion campaigners staged a series of protests in Bristol city centre today (Saturday, November 9).

A small group of teenagers – members of Extinction Rebellion (XR) Youth South West – held sit-ins and 'die-ins' at stores around Broadmead.

The group of teens – some wearing anti-pollution masks – targeted fashion retailers Primark and Select, banks including TSB, and the Flight Centre chanting climate change messages.

Small groups of shoppers stood to watch the group as they chanted ‘no coal, no oil, keep our carbon in the soil’.

The group said they were focusing their action on fast fashion chains, banks who invest in fossil fuels and aviation companies such as the Flight Centre, as they say the aviation industry is the biggest cause of carbon emissions

Renee Webber, aged 15 and from Bristol, said: “Our protest today is about consumerism.

“We want to raise awareness of how people can do simple things and have a major impact on climate change.”

The groups were quickly moved on from the stores amid fears they were blocking a main fire exit.

Ben Goree, 16, from Bristol, said: "This is about our future. The ongoing climate change crisis is only going to get worse and it’s our generation that will feel the impact and those of the future.”

“We want to raise awareness of how people can do simple things and have a major impact on climate change."
