Extinction Rebellion Bristol protest: What The Red Brigade is and what the costumes mean

If you've been walking around Bristol city centre you will no doubt have seen the large-scale Extinction Rebellion protest this week.

And one group at the protest has been drawing particular interest.

Known as 'The Red Brigade', activists have been walking around with white painted faces and long red robes.

Red veils partially mask their faces and they frequently walk and stand together performing choreographed movements.

They have been seen all around the city, including in Castle Park and on Bristol Bridge.

And now, the meaning behind the group has been explained.

You can follow our live coverage of Extinction Rebellion protests here.

The Red Brigade explained

Who are the Red Brigade seen during the Extinction Rebellion protests

A man with the group explained: "The red is to represent all the sentient beings that have gone before due to climate change and the sentient beings that we're about to lose, including humankind, through climate change.

"Extinction Rebellion supporters to the core, we're not politically affiliated, we are basically here with a silent protest to draw attention to the issues surrounding the climate emergency."

The group were outside Bristol Magistrates' Court today (July 19) as 16 Extinction Rebellion members appear charged with wilfully obstructing a public highway.

You can follow live updates from the courtroom here.
