Extinction Rebellion announce plans for another climate change protest in Leeds city centre

Climate change campaigners in Leeds have revealed plans to hold another strike in the city centre.

Hundreds of activists descended on Neville Street on Monday, July 15 and caused travel chaos for a week as they camped out on the busy Leeds city centre road.

The massive protest was aimed at forcing the hands governments across the globe by demanding that they declare a climate emergency and act urgently to limit the use of fossil fuels.

Leaders of the Leeds-based branch of Extinction Rebellion have today confirmed they will be holding another protest to coincide with a worldwide campaign at 11am on Friday, September 20.

The good news for commuters is that this protest will not close any roads. Instead, it will be held in Millennium Square outside Leeds Civic Hall.

It will form part of the global School Strikes for Climate campaign, which have grown to be the largest ever protests against climate change.

1.4 million students from 125 countries took part in a similar protest in March this year, with climate change campaigners suggesting there could be similarly huge numbers this time round.

Organisers say the Leeds strike will begin at 11am ahead of a day of speeches, poetry, music, dance and protesting.
