Extinction Rebellion activists to hold 'funeral' outside Leeds court

Extinction Rebellion Leeds and the COP26 Coalition are set protest outside Leeds Magistrates Court on Tuesday, December 14.

The protest follows plans to expand Leeds Bradford Airport, the Policing and Sentencing bill, and in support of a fellow Leeds climate activist who was arrested earlier this year.

Activists will be gathering between 1pm to 2pm to 'hold a funeral for Leeds' carbon budget.'

They claim the protest is in response to the expansion of Leeds Bradford Airport which will mean the near doubling of carbon emissions by 2030.

Spokesperson for the protest alleges: "The expansion will spell disaster for the climate crisis and cause the spilling of blood as climate breakdown intensifies.

"The policing and sentencing bill will in effect grant powers to the police, which will eliminate society's right to protest and a voice."

They will also be supporting a fellow activist who was arrested in February earlier this year for throwing fake blood on the steps of Leeds Civic Hall during a protest.

Their trial for criminal damage, which was postponed earlier last month for technical reasons, will be heard on the morning of December 14.
