Extinction Rebellion activists stop the traffic for eight minutes on busy city centre street

Extinction Rebellion activists stopped the traffic for eight minutes on Tara Street this afternoon.

Protesters from the group passed out buns and cakes to drivers before asking them to turn off their engines in a show of supports with the climate activists.

It comes nearly a week after Extinction Rebellion activists glued themselves to Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment in Dublin.

Last Monday, protesters glued themselves to the doors outside the building after members of the same group stormed the room and interrupted a speech by Environment Minister Richard Bruton at Dublin's Botanic Gardens.

Extinction Rebellion believes that commercial forestry is using the climate emergency as an excuse to endanger biodiversity, by planting Sitka trees across Ireland.

The international Extinction Rebellion movement began last summer in the UK and rose to prominence in November 2018 when thousands of activists disrupted travel in London.
