Extinction Rebellion activists have blocked major roads in north London in their latest stunt to bring awareness to climate change.
The demonstrators said they were bringing roads to a halt in Camden “in open rebellion to our borough’s dirty air”.
The group said: “Every year air pollution kills 9,000 Londoners and 8.8 million people globally. We demand faster action from council and government on air pollution.
“We do not do this because we want to, but because we feel have no other choice. It's our children's lungs and our children's future.”
Pictures showed activists blocking roads at Camden Parkway while holding a banner which read: “Climate change: 12 years to save the earth.”
Protesters gathered from 5.30pm outside of Camden Town Tube station and stayed until 7pm, halting some rush-hour commuters.
Wednesday’s stunt followed a rush-hour demonstration in Lewisham last Friday, where several young people blocked traffic for seven minutes at a time.
Camden Council said: “Camden is committed to leading the way in tackling the climate crisis and has already reduced its CO2 emissions by 32 per cent since 2010.”
