Extinction Rebellion: Activist says court appearance has 'spurred him on'

A Bristol carpenter and member of Extinction Rebellion says he remains dedicated to the cause after appearing in court charged with public order offences.

Jan Piotrowski from Bedminster was arrested back in April after obstructing a road during ten days of marches and widespread disruption in London.

The 33-year-old, of Luckwell Road, was one of 20 Extinction Rebellion members on trial this week and was found guilty at City of London Magistrates Court on Monday (November 4).

As well as the London protests, the activist took part in the and built portaloos for the hundreds of campers in Castle Park .

Speaking to Bristol Live , he discussed why he joined the environmental movement in the first place and how the group may change in the future.

"I was sick and tired of feeling powerless about the future and nothing being done," he said.

"I felt Extinction Rebellion offered hope."

The activist says the group is now keen to "evolve" following the most recent action in London.

Last month, the movement sparked backlash after a protester from Bristol was dragged off a train roof at Canning Town Station by frustrated commuters.

"I feel like there's been a lot of reflection since the most recent London action," Mr Piotrowski said.

"What we did in London initially was amazing for raising awareness but I think people are keen to evolve from blocking roads.

"There's a lot of amazing creativity and energy in the group and there's a lot of ideas of how to move forwards.

"More generally we want to appeal to everyone."

Asked whether the arrest had deterred him from protesting in the future, Mr Piotrowski responded: "Absolutely not. It's actually spurred me on.

"I want to continue doing this."

Following his court appearance, Mr Piotrowski was found guilty of being a public assembly participant and failing to comply with a condition.

He received a conditional discharge for nine months and was ordered to pay a fine of £380.
