March 29--Metro's Expo Line resumed regular service Sunday after a train collided with a passenger car near the University of Southern California campus on Saturday, injuring 12 people and disrupting service between downtown Los Angeles and Culver City.
The driver of a silver Hyundai sedan made a left turn across rail tracks near a USC campus gate about 10:50 a.m. Saturday, ramming into an Expo Line train as it pulled out of a station near Exposition Park.
The driver of the car, a 21-year-old USC film student who had to be cut out of the vehicle, and the operator of the train, Kenneth Goss, who has worked for Metro for 29 years, suffered serious injuries and were taken to a local hospital. The driver of the Hyundai remained in stable condition, while Goss was allowed to go home Saturday night.
Ten other people suffered minor injuries in the crash.
The accident caused major delays on the Expo Line, with shuttle buses replacing part of the route as tens of thousands of people descended on the area for a sold-out Mexico-Ecuador soccer match at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Saturday evening.
Saturday's crash was at least the fourth on the Expo Line in the last 12 months. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but the incident renewed concerns about whether more safety precautions are needed at some Metro rail crossings.
