A man has been charged with arson and possessing explosives over a Melbourne warehouse fire.

The South Melbourne building went up in flames about midnight May 5, taking about 50 firefighters to extinguish it and closing a nearby primary school due to the smoke.

On Tuesday detectives arrested a 30-year-old Parkville man and seized explosives and electronic items.

They have since charged the man over the fire and with making a false document.

He was remanded in custody to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.
