Explosive devices found by police in Plymouth as bomb blast leaves boy in hospital

Multiple explosive devices were found during a police raid after a 12-year-old boy was seriously injured in a blast.

The young boy was injured by a suspected home-made explosive device on Monday night (September 23) and remains in a serious condition in hospital.

The incident sparked a police investigation and a house in Plymouth was soon raided by police.

Officers, alongside the Royal Navy's Explosive Ordnance Disposal team, found a 'number' of other explosives after searching the Lewes Gardens area.

They were taken away and detonated in nearby woodland.

Two men, aged 16 and 64, have since been arrested.

The 16-year-old boy from Plymouth was arrested on suspicion of possession of an explosive with intent to endanger life and has since been released under investigation.

The 64-year-old man from Plymouth was arrested on suspicion of making/possessing explosive with intent to endanger life and has been released on police bail until October 23.

Devon and Cornwall Police say searches remain ongoing.

A spokesperson said: "A number of searches have taken place in the area of Lewes Gardens today and a cordon remains in place.

“Searches are expected to remain ongoing over the next two to three days in relation to this matter.

“I’m keen to provide reassurance that there is no risk to the public and that there is no evidence to suggest that the incident is linked to terrorism.”

The spokesperson added: "As a result of the incident a 12-year-old boy was taken to Derriford hospital with serious injuries, where he remains at this time.

"Officers investigating, along with the Royal Navy EOD team, have attended and search properties in the area and seized a number of devices."
