'Explosions' heard more than three miles away from serious M5 crash

‘Explosions’ from the M5 crash were heard more than three miles away in the early hours of Sunday.

Residents of Bishop’s Cleeve, in Tewkesbury, took to social media claiming to have heard an ‘explosion’ and a ‘bang’.

Gloucestershire police have confirmed that a multi-vehicle crash took place on the motorway at around 5.20am on Sunday.

The motorway has been shut to traffic in both directions following a serious collision. It is closed from Junction 11 for the Golden Valley bypass, to Junction 9 for Tewkesbury.

It is not known if anyone has been injured in the incident and our live blog will bring you the latest news as we get it.

Gloucestershire Constabulary have said that they expect the road to be closed for the rest of the day following the incident.

The police, found on Twitter at @Glos_Police, posted: “We're at the scene of a serious collision on the M5 between junctions 9 and 11 which happened at 5.20am today, 13/09.

“Closures are in place between junction 9 and 11 after a multiple vehicle collision. The road is expected to remain closed for the rest of the day.”
