Explosions heard as car bursts into flames near Birkenhead Asda

Explosions were heard close to Birkenhead Asda after a car burst into flames.

Fire crews were called to Woodchurch Road shortly before 8pm to reports that a vehicle was on fire.

Video footage of the blaze was captured by Ant Jones which showed thick black smoke billowing from the car that was well alight before firefighters arrived at the scene.

In the video, loud explosions can also be heard coming from that car that was extinguished a short time later.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue told the ECHO : "Crews were alerted to the fire on Woodchurch Road at 7.50pm.

"One fire engine attended the scene and got the fire under control.

"There were no reports of any injuries in relation to the fire."

Cars were directed around the scene as firefighters tackles the fire while Birkenhead buses were diverted from the area.

Stagecoach MCSL tweeted: "Please be aware service 41A,41B & 42 to the Woodchurch and service 471/472 to Heswall are currently running a delay due to a vehicle on fire on Woodchurch road.

"Sorry for any delays caused."
