Explosion kills two UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon

United Nations Lebanon UNIFIL
  • Two Indonesian soldiers serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) were killed by an exploding "projectile" of unknown origin in southern Lebanon on Sunday.
  • The incident, which also injured two others, prompted UNIFIL to launch an investigation and call on all parties to ensure the safety of UN personnel.
  • Separately, a Polish UNIFIL soldier sustained minor injuries from a roadside device detonation, and a Ghanaian detachment was critically injured by Israeli tank fire on 6 March.
  • UNIFIL, established in 1978 to monitor the Israel-Lebanon demarcation line, is currently operating amidst intense clashes between the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) and Hezbollah.
  • The mission is scheduled to withdraw by 31 December 2026, following pressure from Israel and the US, which under Donald Trump, has regarded UNIFIL as a financial burden.
