Explosion in Govan street sees two people rushed to hospital and residents evacuated

A man and a woman have been taken to hospital after an explosion in a second floor flat in Govan.

Cops raced to the scene on Kennedar Drive, in the Elderpark area of Glasgow, at 7am this morning.

A man was rushed to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

A woman was also taken by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

Details about their injuries are unknown.

One witness told the Record: "There wasn’t a loud bang but the damage is right across the road.

"I don’t know the couple but I’ve heard they’re young."

"These flats are only 6 years old so hopefully it isn’t an issue through the whole building."

Emergency services have evacuated 23 residents from nearby buildings as a precaution.

The cause of the explosion is currently unknown.

One local posted on Facebook: "Oh my God, explosion on Kennedar Drive.

"Pray the family in the house are all okay." 

A Police spokesperson said: "At around 7:05am police were called to a reports of an explosion at a block of flats in Kennedar Drive, in the Elder Park area.

"One man was taken by ambulance to Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

"One woman was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

"23 people have been evacuated as a precaution.
