Explosion at college after bomb squad called over dangerous substance

An explosion was carried out at a college after a dangerous substance was found on the playing fields.

Police were called on Tuesday afternoon by Ellesmere Port CofE College after staff discovered the hazardous substance.

According to Cheshire Live, On Wednesday morning, the Explosive Ordinance Disposal attended the school to test the substance.

Following an assessment, it was decided that the best course of action would be a controlled explosion.

Shortly after 9am an explosion was carried out on the campus with the college's head of science Mr Loon being allowed to press the button to set off the explosion.

There were no students at the college at the time of the explosion.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Cheshire Police said: "Shortly after 4.00pm on Tuesday 5 January officers from Cheshire Police received reports that a hazardous substance had been found at a higher education facility in Ellesmere Port.

"The substance was not suspicious, but as a precautionary measure a decision was taken by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) to conduct a controlled explosion.

"The explosion was managed by the EOD and took place shortly after 9am on Wednesday 6 January."
