Nalanda, known as one of the greatest centers of learning in ancient times, is located in Bihar, and makes for an interesting place to visit. Situated around 72 km away from the city, this small village is part of the Buddhist Circuit that also includes Rajgir and Bodh Gaya. Reaching this spot also won’t be a hassle as it has a good network of roads.

All about its history

This ancient site of learning was founded in the 5th century AD, where one can now find the remains of the great university, along with many temples, monasteries, and viharas that were built by different kings.

As per the records, Buddha visited Nalanda several times during his lifetime, however, it shot to fame as a centre of Buddhist learning much later. If records are to go by, it’s this first residential international university of the world, where around 2000 teachers and 10000 students lived and studied.

The university managed to remain in prominence till 12 century AD, when the Afghans attacked the region and burnt down this great university.
