Explorers see dead prisoners' faces in chilling haunted prison that saw several murders

Fans of the paranormal have been given a glimpse behind the walls of a haunted prison where urban explorers have seen the faces of dead inmates.

The old Joliet prison opened its doors in 1858 and then housed 33 inmates before being run for two centuries in Illinois, US.

It was the scene of several murders and the first prison officer to be killed was Joseph Clark as its population grew to more than 1,000 inmates.

In 2002 budget cuts meant the holding facility could no longer remain in operation and the prison closed.

Since then, the empty building has been converted into an infamous haunted house attraction that as the prison is said to be rife with paranormal activity.

The charred bones were hidden inside a white vault that has a large black cross on the wall but the crypt has since been closed off.

It's not clear what happened to the people whose bones were found there.

The building, however, was said to have belonged to a satanic family that stole from other churches and was designed by a man who cut off his own hands after the building work was finished
