Exploiting NFL rule loopholes is one way to make Bill Belichick smile

If you’ve ever seen Bill Belichick smile, you know it’s a rarity and sometimes it can be a little frightening.

But if you stayed up to watch the New England Patriots’ 33-0 blowout of the New York Jets on Monday night, you got to see the Belichick smile on a series of plays that only Belichick can think of running to exploit an NFL rules loophole (which, as he later said, will probably be closed). It’s the most Belichick sequence ever, so OF COURSE he smiled!

In the fourth quarter, he decided to take a delay of game penalty with the punt team out, and when the Jets declined it, the clock started. The Pats then did a false start and the Jets declined. The clock ran again, not that it mattered for the Jets. But that’s a terrific way to run time off if you need to.

This was Belichick’s reaction:

Here’s what he said about it afterward:

“No, it was just the way the rules are set up. We were able to run quite a bit of time off the clock without really having to do anything, so … that’s probably a loophole that will be closed and probably should be closed, but right now it’s open.”

Mwahahaha.
