'Exploding Kinder Eggs' stash found as man faces gunpowder and weapons rap

A factory worker has appeared in court accused of keeping gunpowder in Kinder Eggs in his home.

Daniel Magee, 38, was charged with four offences after police searched his property on Shetland Road, Southmead, Bristol, on Saturday, December 28.

The charges were making an explosive substance - nitro-glycerine gunpowder - and blank ammunition for an unlawful purpose, possessing three stun guns, possessing a 12-inch sword and importing a telescopic baton with intent to evade a prohibition.

Magee, who has short, light brown hair, stood in the dock of Bristol Magistrates' Court on Monday, wearing a grey T-shirt and tracksuit bottoms.

He did not enter a plea, speaking only to confirm his name, age and address.

Prosecutor May Li said police found explosives and blank ammunition in 14 chocolate Kinder Eggs which were allegedly taped together in Magee's home.

Presiding Justice, Dr Peter Reed, remanded the defendant in custody and adjourned the case to January 2 at the same court.

Attorney General Geoffrey Cox must give his approval for proceedings to continue, which is the normal protocol for cases involving explosives.

The Shetland Road home was cordoned off by police on Saturday and officers were still searching the property on Monday.
