Explanation behind plane that disrupted Sky Sports coverage of Everton and Liverpool

The reason behind a plane being flown over Goodison Park at the beginning of the latest Merseyside derby has been explained.

Everton and Liverpool played out a 0-0 draw on Sunday evening in their first Premier League action in over three months due to the coronavirus pandemic - with the visitors dominating possession but the hosts creating the better chances.

However, the build-up to the game was dominated by one particular thing according to those supporters ready to watch proceedings from home, with no fans being allowed inside the stadium.

The noise of a plane could be heard on Sky Sports' coverage while the two sides were warming up and pundits were giving their thoughts ahead of the game.

But, the reason the aircraft was flown over the stadium had nothing to do with matters on the pitch.

Everton supporters group The Blue Union later tweeted a picture of the plane above Goodison Park which showed a banner reading "BA Betrayal".

Unite launched a campaign against British Airways last month to oppose the company's cuts and changes during the coronavirus pandemic which have reportedly affected thousands of workers.

And it seems the opportunity was taken ahead of the Merseyside derby to get the message out to a wider audience during the build-up of the match.
