Explanation after mystery noise leaves beds 'vibrating' at night

People in one area of Wirral have been complaining of a noise waking them up in the middle of the night which has been making their beds vibrate.

Posting on social media, a Birkenhead resident said: "Can anyone shed any light on the banging in Birkenhead Park area?

"Happened the last few nights and always around 1am."

The poster added: "Can literally feel the bed and ground vibrate."

Several people said they'd also been disturbed by the noise.

One person said: "Yes it's some banging."

Another added: "It keeps me awake all the time always when I have to get up for work."

Responding to the post, there were various explanations put forward, including one person who asked: "Squirrels running into trees maybe?"

Most people however put the noise down to works being carried out a Birkenhead Park train station.

A spokesperson for Merseyrail confirmed to the ECHO that work was currently being carried out at the station, including recent work which had caused vibrations, apologising to resident for any inconvenience caused.

Merseyrail head of communications, Greg Suligowski said: "We are currently working with partners to improve the accessibility of Birkenhead Park station by installing new lifts.

"In order to keep the station open during the day, our contractors have been working overnight.

"Recently a short period of piling work was carried out, which we believe has led to the vibration and noise that some residents have noted.

"This phase of the work is now complete and I’d like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.

"Whilst some overnight work will continue to ensure the prompt delivery of this important improvement scheme, we will work closely with our contractors to ensure that disruption to local people is kept to an absolute minimum.“
