Explained: Why there was a jump in the number of coronavirus cases today as 46 new cases reported

A further 46 coronavirus were confirmed today, a noticeable increase compared to recent days.

The number of cases in Ireland has remained relatively low in the past few days before today's jump.

On Friday just 13 cases were recorded while on Thursday just eight cases were confirmed.

But Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan has insisted there has not been a rise in the daily incidence of the virus in Ireland:

Here's why there was such a jump in todays figures:

Dr Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health. (Colin Keegan, Collins Dublin)

The Department has said today's jump is due to the fact that 22 of these samples were taken on Monday where 12 were confirmed and Tuesday where 10 cases were confirmed.

They would normally have been reported on Thursday and Friday but, for technical reasons as part of normal laboratory practice at the National Virus Reference Laboratory (NVRL), are being reported today.

Dr. Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health, said; “Today’s increase in notifications of COVID-19 is not an increase in the daily incidence of the disease.

"When the cases are analysed according to the date the samples were taken, it shows that they were spread out over a number of days. All the indicators of the disease are stable or reducing. We will continue to closely monitor these every day."

Sadly a further five Covid-19 related deaths were reported today bringing Ireland's death toll to 1,705.

The total number of cases in Ireland is now 25,295.
