Brexit: What is the whip and why has Conservative MP Ken Clarke had it removed after crucial Brexit vote?

During a turbulent time for our county, you might be confused as to what all this Parliamentary jargon means.

Whips, Brexit, emergency bills - it's all very confusing for some of us.

It was announced yesterday that the Rushcliffe MP had the whip withdrawn from the Conservative party after he rebelled against the party.

The 79-year-old MP was among 21 other Tory rebels who voted to take control of the Commons agenda to block a no-deal Brexit.

But what is the whip and why has Mr Clarke had it removed?

And no - it doesn't mean MPs are hitting each other with long leather weapons in the House of Commons.

Who/what is a 'whip'?

Whips are MPs or members of the House of Lords who sort out their party's contribution to parliamentary bussiness.

One of their main jobs is to make sure that party members vote the way their party wants so they can pass specific bills or laws through Parliament.

MPs are also handed out a document each week called 'The Whip' that tells them what upcoming business is taking place.

You also have a 'chief whip' that oversees the whipping system. The chief whip for the Conservatives is Sherwood MP Mark Spencer.

What is a three-line whip?

Each business on 'The Whip' is underlined depending on how important it is. Important business is underlined three times hence the phrase 'three-line whip'.

These are important divisions and they must attend and vote with their party.

Breaking three-line whips can be extremely serious and lead to an MP having their whip withdrawn.

What happens when your whip is withdrawn?

This is the ultimate punishment for any MP which is what has happened to Ken Clarke. It means an MP is expelled from the party.

They do not lose their seat and sit as an independent unless they have the whip given back to them.
