Explained: The substantial fee Bristol City would have to pay Ipswich Town should they accept Brighton & Hove Albion's Adam Webster bid

Premier League Brighton & Hove Albion have stepped up their interest in Adam Webster.

The Bristol City defender has been subject to interest all summer, with Aston Villa having already had a bid knocked back for him.

Now the Seagulls have joined the race, having submitted a £20m bid plus £5m worth of add-ons for the centre-back.

Robins boss Lee Johnson admitted he was not as confident of keeping Webster as he was a few weeks ago, and some reports suggest the two clubs are close to agreeing a deal.

Yet the Robins would not be able to pocket all £20m should they opt to accept the bid.

City bought Webster from Ipswich Town last summer for a fee believed to be £3.5m, meaning they are set to make a healthy profit on the player.

Yet the Tractor Boys, who were relegated to League One last season, negotiated a sell-on clause into the deal, so will be due a cut of whatever the Robins make off of the player.

The clause has been reported to be either 20 per cent or 25 per cent - of the profits.

That means, from an initial £20m fee, the Robins would have to give Ipswich either 20 or 25 per cent of the £16.5m profit over the original reported £3.5m fee agreed to sign Webster from Ipswich.

Depending on other contractual clauses triggered too, a payment of between £3.3m to £4.13m could be heading to the Tractor Boys.
