Mystery of military helicopters that swept across part of Ireland explained

Cork locals were left scratching their heads after a line of helicopters flew over the city yesterday evening.

The three choppers came in from the harbour side in a line - and continued on and out the other side.

Which isn't the strangest thing to happen as often these things can be tracked on various aviation websites.

Normally, these flight tracking apps will give you real-time information on aircraft, such as their flight path, call signs and destinations.

But last night - none of the helicopters circling over Cork seemed to be showing up, creating an immediate buzz on social media.

One Twitter user in north Cork asked if anybody had seen 'the red lights in the sky? I looked out the window and thought they were UFOs until I heard the chopper sound!"

"Checked out plane finder and showing as "WOLF" - Irish Air Corps...Cool!"

A spokesperson for the Defence Forces confirmed to CorkBeo that choppers - and later aircraft - were indeed Air Corps.

What Leesiders - and people as far away as Tipp and Waterford were seeing in the sky - was the most visible part of a major exercise over Munster and the south coast.

"Óglaigh na hÉireann are currently conducting a routine military exercise in Co Cork. This exercise involves the use of a number of Defence Forces assets including several aircraft," said a Defence Forces spokesperson.

Operational details are not being released - but the Air Corps does have several types of helicopters, including six Agusta Westland AW139s, two EC135 P2s and two EC135 T2s (which are tasked to Garda support).
