Explained - The biggest dilemma Nottingham Forest boss Sabri Lamouchi faces against Middlesbrough

Eight months into the job, Sabri Lamouchi has a clear first-choice Nottingham Forest XI.

When everyone is fully fit, the team almost picks itself at the moment - not least because most of those in possession of the shirts are playing out of their skins; others are struggling to get a look-in.

But with one key player currently struggling with injury, it means the head coach may well have something of a selection dilemma come next Monday's trip to Middlesbrough.

Samba Sow has been crucial for the Reds this season. And he has a great record wearing the Garibaldi, losing only one of the 19 games he has played.

A recurrence of a knee problem has kept him out of the last two, however - including Tuesday night's triumph at Cardiff City.

Such is Sow's importance, with 11 games still to play this term, Forest will no doubt wish to be ultra-cautious. It would make no sense to take any risks with him.

Even if he is 100 percent, though, Lamouchi could have a decision to make about whether he makes the line-up at the Riverside.

Ryan Yates started in central midfield alongside Ben Watson against the Bluebirds. He did not do a bad job, by any means.

Yates is not afraid of getting stuck in, or of doing the leg work which sometimes goes unnoticed. He is currently on the receiving end of a lot of unwarranted stick from some fans.

Lamouchi, though, brought him off at half-time in South Wales, bringing on Alfa Semedo for the second half.

“I said sorry to Ryan, it was just a tactical choice," said the Frenchman.

“Sometimes, to play wide, we just need some players to take that run. Alfa has more of that quality. That’s it, nothing else."

Semedo adds a little more creativity. That's nothing against Yates - the two are just very different players, with very different qualities; both of which can be useful.

It's the same with Sow.

And the task for Lamouchi is to decide who will best fit the role against Boro.

Does he keep Semedo in, after he came on and added a bit of impetus in Cardiff? Does he start with Yates again, for his battling qualities against a side scrapping for survival?

Does Sow get the nod, if his knee can hold up? Or does he drop Tiago Silva into the deeper role, where he played to begin with in the draw against QPR?

If he's fit, the safe bet would be on Sow being back in the XI. But it's one area where there is a choice to be made - and an important one at that.
