Experts warn against viral TikTok trend that could land you with a €5,000 fine

Insurance experts have come out strongly against a new viral trend which claims to ensure that drivers have clear visibility at all times.

Motorists are always looking for life hacks to make their cars a bit slicker or their journeys a bit easier.

However, a new option is now going viral, claiming that you will never have to use your windscreen wipers again.

A solution for keeping your windscreen water-free has been trending on TikTok - one which apparently makes it water-repellent, allowing you clear vision while driving.

Despite the TikToker’s rave reviews, experts at Chill Insurance advise that relying on this for improving visibility in adverse conditions can be very risky, and expensive.

They warned: "Driving in extreme weather conditions can be very dangerous, so extra care is needed at all times. Whilst the water-repellent solution appears to work to some degree in the TikTok video, we would argue that visibility is still impaired from the rain, and therefore not using the windscreen wipers is making it dangerous to drive.

"Therefore, drivers should not solely rely on the water-repellent solution to keep water off their windscreens to avoid dangerous driving conditions.

"Whilst your car insurance will still cover you for driving in extreme weather conditions, that doesn’t mean you should take unnecessary risks on the road. If your insurance company can prove that any accidents that occur do so from your own negligence, for example relying on water-resistant spray in heavy rain without using windscreen wipers, then it may result in not getting the needed payout if the worst should happen."

The experts even noted that a hefty fine could be the result - because the solution could lead to dangerous driving due to a false confidence.

Depending on how dangerous you've driven, a €5k fine can be issued by Gardai.
