Experts warn against pouring gravy and grease down the sink this Easter

Environmental experts have reminded the public not to use the sink as a bin over Easter.

The plea comes as Irish Water revealed it cleared 1,500 sewer blockages so far this year.

It has teamed up with Clean Coasts to ask the public not to pour gravy or fats, oils and greases (FOGs) from our Easter roasts down the sink.

FOGs and gravy might seem like liquid when they’re poured but they can cool and cause blockage in pipes when they cool.

Spice bags are a new Easter Sunday favourite for Irish people

An Taisce’s environmental education unit director Michael John O’Mahony said: “The prevention of blockages in our wastewater systems by fats, oils and greases is something everybody can engage in.

“I would encourage and remind everyone to think before you pour this Easter.”

Experts have also warned against wipes and sanitary items being flushed down the toilet.

A recent survey revealed that 85% of people living in Ireland dispose of food items down the kitchen sink.
