Experts share whether linen bedding is better than cotton

Should you choose linen or cotton sheets? An expert explains - (Getty/iStock)

Linen and cotton are two of the most popular options for bedding. Both offer their own set of benefits, textures and price points. Cotton has long been considered the go-to for softness and affordability, but linen has gained popularity for its breathability, durability and relaxed feel.

But when it comes down to it, is one actually better than the other? The answer isn’t always straightforward, but there’s more to it than personal preference; things like climate or sleep habits can affect which is actually better for you, and even the climate you live in.

With this in mind, I spoke to Christina Heiser, content director and in-house expert at Saatva, to find out the key differences between linen and cotton bedding.

What is the difference between linen and cotton bedding? “Linen is made from flax fibres, while cotton bedding is made from cotton plant fibres,” Heiser explains. “Linen typically has a more textured appearance and relaxed aesthetic, while cotton generally feels smoother and softer immediately out of the package. Both are natural fibres known for breathability and comfort.”

What are the benefits of linen bedding?

According to Heiser, linen bedding has many benefits. It’s highly breathable, moisture-wicking and temperature-regulating. “One of its greatest advantages is its ability to absorb moisture without feeling damp,” she says. “Linen can absorb up to 20 per cent of its weight in moisture before it begins to feel wet, helping pull sweat away from the body and allowing it to evaporate more quickly. This makes linen highly beneficial for hot sleepers, those experiencing night sweats, and people living in warm or humid climates.”

Alongside this, linen is also a durable option and tends to become softer over time without losing strength.

What are the benefits of cotton bedding?

Cotton bedding also has its benefits. It’s softer and easier to care for. “Depending on the weave, cotton can feel crisp and cooling, like percale, or smooth and silky, like sateen. Cotton also tends to have a lower upfront cost and is available in a wider range of styles and finishes,” Heiser says.

Is linen bedding more durable than cotton?

Generally, linen bedding is more durable than cotton. Heiser explains: “High-quality linen can last for many years when properly maintained. Its strong natural fibres are resistant to wear and become softer with repeated washing rather than breaking down.”

Is linen bedding worth the higher price point?

According to Heiser, linen bedding is worth the investment for most people. “Its ability to absorb moisture while remaining comfortable is one reason it continues as a favorite among hot sleepers and those living in warmer climates. And because it tends to last longer than many cotton products and becomes softer over time, the higher initial cost is offset by its extended lifespan.”

Who may be better suited to cotton bedding?

If you’re looking for a softer feel right away or a lower price point, cotton bedding may be the better choice. “It is also a great option for those who prefer a smoother, more traditional bedding feel,” Heiser says.
