Experts share the best thing to do if you are struggling to sleep

Experts have revealed the best thing you can do if you are struggling to sleep.

While it may seem counter-intuitive, people are being advised to get up and do something, rather than just lying down, if they don't nod off after 20 minutes.

Dr Nabil S Kamel and Dr Julie K Gammack told The New York Times that you should only be going to bed when you are sleepy.

They recommended taking a bath or reading, and only returning to the bedroom when you feel tired.

It is also advised that if you are having trouble getting your 40 winks, you should stop yourself from using the bedroom for anything other than sleep and sex.

The idea is that your brain begins to only associate the room with sleep, to help signal to your mind it is bedtime.

More than 700 people in Liverpool were admitted to hospital to be treated for a sleep disorder in 2016-17.

While most of the admissions were for sleep apnoea - a serious disorder that occurs when you stop breathing in your sleep - many were also for insomnia.

According to the NHS, one in three of us suffers from poor sleep, with stress, computers and taking work home some of the main causes.

While an occasional night without sleep makes you more tired and irritable the next day, it won’t harm your health.

However, as well as affecting your mood, several sleepless nights will make it difficult to concentrate and make decisions, putting you at risk of injury and accidents at home, work and on the road.

Meanwhile, regular poor sleep puts you at risk of serious medical conditions, including obesity, heart disease and diabetes - and it shortens your life expectancy.

Nationally, more than 29,000 people are hospitalised by a sleep disorder every year.
