Experts reveal the top foods you can eat to boost immunity ahead of winter flu season

With temperatures plummeting to below freezing this week, the arrival of wintry weather marks the beginning of cold and flu season in Ireland.

Over 200,000 people in Ireland were tested for Covid-19 last week and while many of those tested negative for the deadly virus, they still had cold and flu symptoms to contend with.

In fact, one in seven people have reported symptoms of either flu or Covid in the last seven days, according to Dr Tony Holohan.

However, before you get hit with a sore throat, headache or runny nose, there are certain foods you can take to help fend off a cold before it starts developing.

Here are the top 10 foods chosen by the experts to help strengthen your immune system and give your health a boost:

1. Ginger

Stir it up in a herbal tea or use it in a savoury dish, ginger's anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties can help prevent a cold .

2. Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate contains an antioxidant called theobromine that may help to boost the immune system and help suppress coughing.

3. Oranges

Oranges and other citrus fruits are packed with vitamin C, which is proven to boost your body’s immune system.

4. Garlic

Raw garlic can help beat colds and flu thanks to its ability to fight viruses.

5. Blueberries

Eating a bowl of blueberries every day can help the immune system as they are rich in antioxidants.

6. Greek yogurt

Greek yogurt is rich in probiotics which may help to prevent and treat the common cold, as well as being a good source of vitamin D.

7. Oily fish

Oily fish like salmon and tuna are a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, which may enhance your body's ability to fight off illnesses.

8. Broccoli

Broccoli is rich in antioxidant vitamins that give your immune system a boost.

9. Green tea

Drinking green tea is a good way to strengthen the immune system as it contains flavonoids - which may reduce the risk of catching a cold.

10. Water

Staying hydrated is an important part of helping your immune system to function well, as drinking lots of water helps to clear congestion.
