Experts predict miserable outcome for Newcastle United in must-win clash against Burnley

Experts believe Newcastle fans are in for another torrid afternoon when Burnley visit St James’ Park on Saturday.

A winless Magpies side host the Clarets knowing they must win to keep their Premier League survival chances alive.

Defeat to Sean Dyche’s men will plant Newcastle further to the bottom of the table and, with a tricky December run around the corner, hopes of beating the drop will begin to fade rapidly.

Tuesday night was a tough one to take for Magpies fans, who watched their side battle valiantly for over 80 minutes with 10-men before conceding a late Teemu Pukki equaliser.

Only a victory this afternoon can be seen as a good result, as ChronicleLive takes a look at what the experts think will happen…

FiveThirtyEight

FiveThirtyEight is a Football Index that uses statistical data to predict the outcomes of Premier League games.

Their recent forecast spells bad news for Newcastle fans, with the Magpies expected to lose once again at home to Burnley.

The Magpies have an estimated 36% chance of winning on Saturday, making them slight underdogs against the Clarets - who sit at 39%

A draw is predicted at 25%, but that would still be considered a poor result for Toon fans who have billed Saturday’s clash as a must-win game.

Prediction: Newcastle defeat

Mark Lawrenson - BBC Sport

BBC pundit Lawro thinks Newcastle will taste another bitter defeat against Sean Dyche’s side this weekend.

Writing in his weekly column, he said: “Burnley have turned themselves into draw specialists, with four in their past five games.

“They are still in the bottom three but they seem to be playing pretty well, and it feels like the results will come.

“I'm not sure the same applies to Newcastle. Tuesday's home game with Norwich was a must-win, and they didn't win it. The more points they drop, even when they don't lose, just makes it even harder for them to stay up.

“They have left themselves a huge task to survive now - they will probably need to win at least 10 of their remaining 24 games, and I just don't see that happening.”

Prediction: Newcastle 0-2 Burnley

Squawka Football

Football statistics site Squawka believe Newcastle fans will witness a score draw at St James’ Park.

They also predict Burnley to break the deadlock on Saturday, an event that would certainly cause temperature levels to rise inside St James’ Park.

In their match preview, Squawka wrote: “These sides are draw specialists with a combined 14 from the 28 they have played in the Premier League this season.

“Another draw could be on the cards here in a game that neither side can afford to lose.

“Maxwel Cornet has five goals for Burnley this season with four coming in the last five and he will fancy his chances here against the Magpies backline.

“Newcastle have failed to keep a clean-sheet this season and having played 81 minutes with ten men in midweek, tired legs look especially vulnerable to the pace of the Ivorian.”

Prediction: Newcastle 1-1 Burnley
