Experts issue fresh advice about touching products and trolleys in supermarkets

With many shoppers still opting to head to supermarkets during lockdown, it's more crucial than ever to keep people updated on the latest advice and guidelines about how best to stay safe.

Some of the guidance dished out during this period has been confusing, and has left many shoppers wondering whether it's safe to be in supermarkets, and how best to reduce the risk of catching covid-19 while in stores.

Now the World Health Organisation (WHO) has issued fresh new advice to shoppers, reports the Irish Mirror.

A health expert said: "When grocery shopping, keep at least 1-metre distance from others and avoid touching your eyes, mouth and nose. If possible, sanitize the handles of shopping trolleys or baskets before shopping.

"Once home, wash your hands thoroughly and also after handling and storing your purchased products.

"There is currently no confirmed case of COVID-19 transmitted through food or food packaging."

Experts are also urging people not to ditch fresh fruit and vegetables from their diets, as they can help maintain good health during the covid-19 crisis.

The WHO expert added: "Fruits and vegetables are important components of a healthy diet. Wash them the same way you should do under any circumstance: before handling them, wash your hands with soap and water.

"Then, wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly with clean water, especially if you eat them raw."
