Experts identify mysterious 'fireball' seen blazing across Irish skyline last weekend

Experts believe they have identified a mysterious "fireball" that shot across Ireland last weekend.

People in Cork, Galway, Donegal and other spots across the West coast all spotted the flash in the sky on Saturday night.

The phenomenon was seen by thousands of people, with many believing it was a shooting star, Cork Beo reports.

However instead it is believed the spectacular sight was caused by a Chinese satellite re-entering earth's atmosphere.

Astronomy Ireland tweeted yesterday: "Thank you all for your reports of the fireball in the sky last night at about 9pm.

"Our Chairman David Moore thinks that this was the rocket body of a Chinese satellite used to launch 'GPS' type satellite in January 2016, reentering Earth’s atmosphere."

Carlow Weather also shared a graphic which showed space junk flying straight over the south of Ireland last night.

Most people had presumed it was a shooting star or maybe even some form of alien life but it appears not to be.

The first sighting of what some called a "fireball" at about 7:30pm - with dozens of people taking to social media.

UCC Lecturer Dr Sharon Lambert tweeted: "Any idea what the fire ball that passed through the sky in North Cork might be. Travelling at same height and speed as a shooting star only absolutely huge in size. Headed in east west direction."

Mark Dignam said: "Anyone else see the MASSIVE meteorite over Ireland just before 7:30pm? Incredibly bright for a couple of moments."

And that wasn't the only sighting, the amazing sight was seen on at least two more occasions later in the night - first again at around 9pm.

John Corr said: "Just flew west to east across the North sky as seen from Cork. Was visible for about 30seconds. Broke up into a number of pieces and changed colours. Happened at about 21:05."

Patrick Treacy tweeted a few moments after: "Did anyone else see a large fireball in the sky over east Cork about 20 minutes ago?"
