Experts explain why you should never rinse dishes before putting them in the dishwasher

The dishwasher has been at the centre of many debates.

Subject to an array of hacks, tips and tricks, experts usually wade in on which way the cutlery should go and how to properly stack it.

But whether you prefer to chuck everything in and hope for the best, or start an argument with your spouse every time they load it wrong, there's one thing we're all guilty of.

It feels like common sense to rinse dishes before they go into the dishwasher, right? But cleaning experts have now explained why we shouldn't.

Speaking to Femail, cleaning expert from CHOICE, Ashley Iredale, explained that rinsing the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher is pretty pointless.

In fact, she said that it "doesn't make any difference to how clean they come out in the end."

What you should do is simply scrape off the excess food and pop it straight in.

"Using a typical modern dishwasher uses about six times less water than hand-washing a typical pile of dirty dishes," Ashley explained.

Rinsing dishes is not only a waste of money and water, it also keeps you in the kitchen for longer.

The experts also warned to be careful of some viral dishwasher hacks that don't work, and instead recommended vinegar to clean the machines.

While the option is cheap, CHOICE point out that you should check your appliance's manual first, as some brands state you shouldn't use vinegar.

So, to recap, rinsing dishes is wholly unnecessary, a fact most us will probably be pleased to hear.
