Expert warns of one unsanitary bathroom item people always forget to clean

A warning has been issued on the one unsanitary thing in bathrooms that people forget to clean.

Warren Kinloch, a bathroom cleaning expert for Bathroom Deal, revealed that bath mats can be overlooked, but are carriers of both bacteria and mould.

He advised people clean them around twice a week and change them every single year.

He gave some advice, telling RSVP: "Bath mats are notoriously unsanitary and recent studies have even shown that most people will only wash them once or twice a year, leaving them completely covered in bacteria and with the potential to grow mould in the fibres.

"As a bathroom expert, I advise you to wash your fabric bath mats once or twice per week to keep them as bacteria free as possible. When you wash them you can also use a diluted white vinegar solution to really scrub out the dirt.

"However, even if you do clean them twice a week, you still need to be replacing them every year. If replacing them this often is too much of an expense, consider purchasing a wooden bath mat which will last much longer, doesn’t cling onto as much bacteria, and therefore doesn’t need to be cleaned as often."

Warren offered spot cleaning as a remedy for getting rid of dirt and stains on mirror and shower screens.

"The reason shower screens and mirrors can become so streaky when cleaned is because you’ll often go over the same spots, cleaning back and forth," he said.

"The best way to tackle this task is by spot cleaning first, and then going in with larger top to bottom wipes, or side to side if this is your preferred technique.

"Spot clean any obvious smudges or dirtied area of the screen with a vinegar and water mixture for the best results, being careful not to go over the same area twice."

He said to ensure to use a microfiber cloth for sparkle by taking off any dust or bacteria on the surface.

"For the best results, hand wash these microfiber cloths without any fabric softener, as this is a leading contributor to streaky surfaces!

"If you have a bit of spare cash to invest, you can also buy easy clean shower doors and screens, which are great to minimise the amount of time you spend cleaning, and the amount of effort you need to go to to get that streak-free shine we’re all looking for!"
