Expert warning about social media mistakes people make at Christmas

A warning has been issued to those using social media to show off their festive decorations this Christmas.

Home security and safety experts at ADT have revealed the top tips for posting safely on social media, with research showing that there is an increased risk of theft and home burglaries during the festive period. The research from ADT found that robberies increase a mammoth 38.11% at this time of year.

Keep gifts a secret

People have been warned that any images or videos of gifts under the tree, being bought or in the wrapping process could alert burglars that there will be goods left in the property in the lead-up to Christmas Day. People are urged to keep any presents out of view while taking photos or videos of their Christmas tree.

Avoid giving strangers a tour of the house

People may be tempted to show off their decorations around the house but this could give potential criminals the layout of the property, showing possible entrances and exits. If tempted to share the decor, people are urged to focus on images of specific things such as the Christmas tree or table layout instead of the entire room.

Avoid sharing your plans online

It can be tempting for people to share online that they are visiting family or friends for a week during the festive period but this can alert burglars that the property will be empty. To be safe, people are recommended to leave off location tags in posts and save some posts until their back home.

Another recommendation is to install smart plugs that can turn lights on and off to give the impression that someone is home.

Don't show off your doors

When people share photos of their wreaths hanging on the door, or the lights outside their homes, they should be careful to not show the types of locks on the doors and the materials they're made of. People are urged to take photos that don't give thieves information about their homes.

Glenn Amato, Managing Director at ADT UK&I Subscriber, says: “At Christmas, when our houses are decorated, we can feel a bit more house proud, but it is important that we take the necessary steps to protect ourselves and our homes on social media. This festive season, be cautious whilst posting on social media by following our tips, and keep your family safe this Christmas.

“For a greater level of security, it is also essential to consider installing a fully integrated smart alarm system. Systems with add-ons such as cameras and doorbells provide an extra layer of protection which means you don’t have to worry about having an unexpected visitor, especially if you plan on going away for the holidays.”
