Expert stunned by item 'never, ever seen before' on Antiques Roadshow

An expert on Antiques Roadshow was stunned to see an item he has "never, ever seen before" on the hit BBC show.

In tonight's episode, which was a repeat, Fiona Bruce presented the popular show from Wrest Park in Bedfordshire, which was one of the first stately homes in Britain to be converted into a hospital during the First World War.

Some of the items brought in to be valued included a diamond and ruby pendant, a rare snuff container and competing pieces of Daum glassware.

But one guest left expert and fine art auctioneer Jon Baddeley in shock with a rare antique globe.

Examining the piece, Jon Baddeley said: "One of the great things about the Antiques Roadshow, and I've been on the show for over 25 years, is that you - the public - bring me things that I have never, ever seen before.

"We've seen pocket globes but this pocket globe, it says, 'a new terrestrial globe by Palmer and Newton 1783'.

"... I've never seen this make, so thank you very much."

The owner wanted to know how it was made especially considering how old it was and the fact it's a "perfect sphere".

Jon detailed the way the globe would have been made - which included the use of fish skin - and asked how he came to own such a rare item.

The owner revealed his father had left it to him it in his will, but he had no idea how his father came to own it and whether it had been passed down through his family or not.

Expert Jon then said that as the globe was in "fantastic condition" and had been made by a "very rare" maker, it was valued at between £3,500 and £5,000.
