Expert shares 'right' date to put up Christmas tree - and it's earlier than you think

While Christmas seems like months away, there is less than 100 days until the festive season is upon us.

As Christmas always seems to creep up quickly, many will already have holiday decorations on the brain. One of the most exciting is of course the Christmas tree.

Some people may wait until December to put up their tree, while others are happy to pull out the decorations right after Halloween. While there is no right or wrong time to start the festivities, there are questions as to whether there is an exact date we should be putting up the Christmas tree.

Luckily, experts at Christmas Tree World have detailed the perfect date for Brits to put up their Christmas tree, as well as the appropriate time to take it down in the new year.

When should I put up the Christmas tree?

Advent typically starts four Sundays before Christmas day, making Sunday, November 27 the ideal date to start decorating.

Another popular choice for many households decorating their home is December 1 - it’s the beginning of the festive month and setting up your decorations at the start of it marks the official countdown!

Recent years have also seen these popular traditions slip away, especially when it comes to Christmas lovers! The excitement for Christmas is starting earlier each year for some, it’s not uncommon for some to welcome the festive season early and set up their trees as soon as Halloween has ended!

When should I take my Christmas tree down?

Many people may be keen to take the Christmas tree down once the big day celebrations are over, while others like to hang on to that festive cheer for as long as possible.

In Christianity, the traditional date to take your Christmas tree down is twelve days after Christmas. This is because celebrations last for 12 days from the birth of Jesus, so the Twelfth Night - or the twelfth day after Christmas - officially marks the end of the festive season. This year, the Twelfth Night falls on Friday, January 6.

Leaving Christmas decorations up after this date is widely considered to be unlucky.
