Expert shares ‘golden rule’ for getting your toilet clean using just two household ingredients

It’s not exactly the most pleasant job in the world, but cleaning the toilet has to be done - however, it can sometimes be a tough task to get rid of that pesky build-up of stubborn stains.

The most common practice is usually to throw some bleach-based toilet cleaner in the bowl and give it a scrub. But if you’re noticing that your loo is particularly prone to unsightly stains, it may be time to try something different that could prove more successful at lifting limescale.

Chris Wootton, managing director of cleaning business Poppies, has revealed the best way to get your loo sparkling again - and why bleach won’t work, The Express reports. “The golden rule for cleaning toilet bowl stains is to use non-alkaline products,” he explained.

“Most toilet bowl stains appear in hard water areas, so it’s important to remember that bleach won’t work, and you will need to use an acid-based product such as limescale remover.

“While bleach doesn’t get rid of limescale, it does make it invisible which blends in with the colour of the toilet bowl. That’s why toilet bowl stains appear to come back quickly, as they never actually went away.”

So what products can you use to make sure your limescale is gone for good? Chris recommends making your own natural cleaning solution using white vinegar and bicarbonate of soda.

After pouring half a cup of bicarbonate of soda into and around the toilet bowl, let it sit for at least 15 minutes before applying white vinegar over it. This will produce a fizzing reaction that activates the acid and helps to break down those stubborn limescale stains, Chris explains.

After leaving the vinegar and bicarb to work their magic for around ten minutes, get scrubbing with a scouring pad and you should see a big difference after a few flushes. Chris also suggests using lemon juice on any remaining stains.

Vinegar is a popular choice when it comes to home cleaning hacks due to its ability to get things sparkling, from bathroom taps to shower screens. It has also been hailed as a great way to get sunscreen stains out of clothes and lift stains out of walls.
