After the correct way to stack a dishwasher - whether you should rinse before you wash is probably the second biggest debate.
Some swear by it, practically cleaning their plates by hand before sticking them in the dishwasher for another go.
Others believe that's what dishwashers are for - and leave them to do all the work.
Now an expert has given their view, and revealed why rinsing before you wash may actually make things worse, reports The Mirror.
Cleaning expert Ashley Iredale told ABC : "There's absolutely no need to pre-rinse".
Ashley says the problem is that many modern dishwashers are equipped with sensors that tell how dirty dishes are - and therefore how long, hot and powerful a wash they will need.
If we pre-rinse them, Ashely says it may actually fool the dishwasher into thinking it only needs the lightest of washes - which explains why you're left with dirty dishes after a full cycle.
Instead he suggests scraping any solid food into the bin, before popping your dishes into the dishwasher as is - the machine will do the rest of the hard work.
If you're worried about clogging your dishwasher, just clean its filter once a month - which can be found underneath the spray arm.
But, if you've left your plates to sit for hours before starting the cycle, it might need a helping hand to loosen some of the dirt.
Bridget Gardner, director of High Performance Cleaning says: "If the dishes are coated in food containing proteins and carbs that tend to stick, such as milk, cereal or egg, and they are left for hours or even a day before washing, it is expecting too much of any dishwasher to remove."
