Expert says certain herbal tea triggers body's 'cooling receptors' in hot weather

With the UK in the middle of a sweltering heatwave, many are trying desperately to find ways of cooling down. Some might be resorting to sleeping with the fan on, which it turns out can be damaging your health, or using tin foil to keep the sun out of their homes.

Most people will know it's important to stay hydrated while it's so hot, to avoid dehydration and heat exhaustion, but it turns out opting for something other than water could help your body cool down.

Although it might seem counter-intuitive, reaching for hot drinks over cold ones can actually be more effective at keeping your body temperature down.

Reaching for a cuppa might be the last thing on your mind, but it turns out drinking a certain herbal tea can help keep you cool, which is essential as parts of the country experience highs of 30C.

A nutritionist has recommended considering peppermint tea, which is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, and can also help cool you down.

Simone Thomas, a nutritionist and wellness coach, told The Mirror: "Easy to grow in the garden or in pots, and cheap to pick up in the supermarket, peppermint is the perfect pick me and up and offers a natural way to cool down as the herb's menthol stimulates your body's cooling receptors."

When it comes to choosing a hot or cold brew, Simone said she "prefers it cool when it's warm outside as it's so refreshing".

If you can't stand drinking hot drinks in the warm weather, Simone has a great hack to make sure you can still enjoy the herbal remedy.

She said: "I also love to make peppermint tea and then freeze it into ice cubes to use later in the day as a further way to keep cool and remain hydrated.

"You can also add mint and water to a jug of water and call on this natural cocktail all day long when you are feeling the heat and don't want to hit fizzy drinks".
