Expert reveals we've all been using washing machines wrong

Experts have revealed we've been using washing machines wrong this whole time.

Not only that, but they claim selecting the wrong washing cycle is costing us a fortune.

Specialists at MoneyPig have explained what temperature you should choose to save money and avoid damaging clothes.

Following these simple steps will help you save money when doing you laundry:

Cold washes (20-30 degrees)

Cold washes are best for dark colours and delicate fabrics.

It’s also the best choice for lightly soiled clothes, like office wear.

Cold water washes will not harm any washable fabric and will also save on energy bills.

Warm washes (40-50 degrees)

Warm washes are best for synthetic fabrics. Warm water should be chosen for coloured garments that are heavily soiled with oil or stains.

Hot washes (60 degrees +)

Hot washes are best for white cotton fabrics that are worn or used close to the body like underwear, socks, and bed sheets.

Delicate, hand wash, or wool cycle

The wording for this kind of setting differs from machine to machine, but they’re of the same ilk.

Essentially, it’s the machine equivalent to hand-washing.

It’s the shortest and most gentle cleaning cycles and should be used for delicate, fragile items like lingerie, lace, and silk.

The low speed and shorter wash cycle will help prevent stretching and ripping of the fabric.

MoneyPig  spokesperson said: "Selecting the correct washing cycle and water temperature is important not just for taking care of your clothing and linens, but it can also help save money on your energy bills too, whilst being kinder for the environment.

"The cycle choices you make will affect the cleanliness and longevity of your clothes, but you should also consider your wash load size as well."
